Recycle Your Cartons, Miami-Dade County!
Hey Miami-Dade residents! It’s a new year and it’s time to nurture new, healthy habits. Why not resolve to help improve the environment? One simple way to jump-start your efforts is by remembering to recycle your cartons. All of your favorite food and beverage cartons can live on, long after their contents are gone. This includes cartons you use everyday – milk, orange juice, or creamer cartons that go into the refrigerator, along with non-refrigerated cartons like children's juice boxes, soup broth, soy milk, or [...]
WILL ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP HELP SLOW SEA LEVEL RISE IN THE 21ST CENTURY?
Introduction The science behind sea level rise is now unquestionable: the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities releases enormous amounts of greenhouse gases which trap heat in the atmosphere and cause the Earth’s surface temperature to rise. As the atmosphere warms, ocean water absorbs extra heat and glaciers and ice sheets melt; not to mention the thawing permafrost found in Greenland and Antarctica which is releasing high quantities of methane and carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases). As meltwater lubricates the bottom of ice sheets [...]
The Importance of Recycling the Right Way
Last week, Dream in Green's staff toured Waste Management's recycling facilities in Pembroke Pines. To our surprise, it was an eye-opening experience. Many of us think that because we recycle we are doing the right thing. However, that depends on the items we recycle and their condition. Garden hose = NOT recyclable The facility has to be shut down to remove tangled plastic bags We spotted some items (garden hoses, clothes, cooking pan, toys, yard trimmings, etc.) that cannot be recycled. Therefore it is important [...]
The People’s Climate March
On October 14th, over 1,500 people came together for one purpose: to demand politicians and South Florida community leaders to take action on climate change and sea level rise with real solutions. Crowds gathered in downtown Miami and walked to the Torch of Friendship on Biscayne Boulevard chanting “the seas are rising, and so are we!” Children, students, parents, business leaders, artists, farmers, scientists and dozens of organizations including Dream in Green staff and Board members showed up. This has been Miami’s largest public demonstration [...]

Student Carries GSC Lessons Beyond High School
As a student who attended Ransom Everglades School, I was frequently exposed to the importance of environmental protection and the acknowledgement of climate change as an irrefutable—and frankly obvious—scientific fact. My initial arrival at this conclusion was, in large part, due to Ransom’s commitment to “greening” its campus. As a middle school student, I was first introduced to Ransom’s eco-friendly efforts when it became one of the first schools to participate in the pilot year of Dream in Green’s Green Schools Challenge. As one of [...]
