Dream in Green (DIG) is holding its first annual “Eco-Hub” competition whereby three $5,000 grants for elementary, middle and high schools are at stake. The submissions are in, a panel of judges has been formed and six finalists have been chosen:
- Aventura City of Excellence School
- Tropical Elementary
- Caribbean K-8 Center
- Miami Sunset Senior High
- Dante B. Fascell Elementary
- Terra Environmental Research Institute
On February 4th, 2017, the student Green Team members of the chosen schools will present their ideas to six judges at the Miami-Dade STEAM Expo’s 63rd South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SFRSEF). This event is free and open to the public.
The winners of the competition will receive funding to create an eco-hub at their school.
In other words, to turn an indoor or outdoor area into an educational hub where students gather to learn about the environment, raise awareness about its associated challenges, and develop hands-on solutions to environmental issues. This initiative allows students to work as a team, learn about communication strategies and develop leadership capabilities in executing a project which can have a long-lasting impact at the school and in their prospective professional careers. Parallel to these transformational experiences, students learn about financing their projects, budget management and project sustainability.
Thanks to funding from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, DIG was able to create this innovative competition. We are excited to see and hear the presentations and learn more about these incredible proposals. The winners will be announced on Dream in Green’s website and social media pages, so stay tuned!
