Climate Generation announces 12-member delegation to attend United Nations COP27

DIG COP 27 America Is All In

COP27MIAMI, FL. – Climate Generation, a national organization focused on equitable solutions to climate change, has selected 12 climate leaders from across the United States to attend the 27th Conference of the Parties in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt from November 7– November 18, 2022. Barbara Martinez- Guerrero of Dream in Green has been selected as an official member of their Window into COP27 delegation to bring ways to integrate environmental sustainability into K-12 classrooms in South Florida.

Climate Generation’s COP27 delegation will be on the ground in Egypt to bring the international climate negotiations to life for audiences following along in their home communities and digital networks. Representing diverse communities, the Window into COP27 delegates will collect climate stories, share summaries of negotiations, facilitate interviews, host live streams, and represent their unique areas of expertise for the accompanying email digest, with an aim to make international climate policy accessible to everyone.

“Empowering individuals to take action is our organization’s main mission,” said Barbara Martinez-Guerrero, Executive Director of Dream in Green and Climate Generation delegate. “It is our top priority to focus on education, training, public participation, and coordination of networks – all of which are elements of ACE.”

The Window into COP27 delegation represents the work of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) – under Article 12 of the Paris Agreement – that houses the specific goal to empower all members of society to engage in climate action through public access to information, and international cooperation. Full delegation members include:

There is an urgent need to find solutions on how to deal with the climate crisis because economies, the environment, and people depend on it. The growing movement is to engage the population in understanding what can be done and what the responsibility of various stakeholder groups will be. One group that is often passed over is the immigrant and minority population that is being disproportionately affected but does not know what the underlying causes are or what they can do about it. Uniquely in Miami, a large part of local residents are part of this category and make up frontline communities, those that experience the “first and worst” consequences of climate change.

Dream in Green has been working with local schools for the last 15 years and provides hands-on education on various sustainability topics throughout the academic year for students, disseminating the lessons through teacher training. This opportunity for representation on the international stage will provide a way to connect the over 130 schools currently registered in the organization’s Green Schools Challenge program. Students and teachers will be given direct access to this annual event that is attended by world leaders, representatives of nations, preeminent scientists, and business leaders in order to discuss the state of global progress against climate change.

Climate Generation has led delegations of educators, youth, and community leaders to the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties since COP15 in 2009. Climate Generation’s Window into COP program elevates the critical role that an engaged, educated, and activated society holds in pushing the just and equitable action that is needed to mitigate and adapt to climate change on a global scale. The delegation is also a member of the official U.S. ACE Coalition, a group of organizations, institutions, and experts working to accelerate just, efficient, all-of-society action toward a climate-safe future.

Dream in Green was founded in 2006 to address the unique environmental challenges that threaten the future viability of South Florida. The organization’s founders shared a passion for environmental sustainability and recognized that by harnessing the imagination, creativity, and enthusiasm of young minds, schools could serve as fertile ground to shape a community committed to environmental stewardship.
