MIAMI, FL — March 24, 2026 — Student innovation and sustainable design took center stage this weekend as Dream in Green hosted its 8th Annual Design & Build Competition, challenging high school students to envision the future of climate-friendly education. The culminating event took place on March 14 at the Miami’s Main Library, where students presented their net-zero school designs to a panel of expert judges.
Through the competition, student teams were tasked with designing a net-zero energy school—a building that produces as much energy as it consumes—while incorporating sustainable architecture, renewable energy, and environmentally responsible building strategies. Each team constructed a detailed 3D model to bring their vision to life and demonstrate how their school would operate efficiently and sustainably.
At the final showcase, students presented their models and design concepts to a panel of judges that included architects, a school district sustainability officer, representatives from a solar energy company, and a professor from Florida International University. Judges evaluated projects based on innovation, feasibility, sustainability strategies, and overall design. “It was a great experience to see the level of creativity these teams brought to their net-zero models. Students are setting the example by rethinking the relationship between architecture and the environment, showing us that with the right mindset, we can make our schools and buildings operate much more efficiently. It’s inspiring to see the next generation already leading the way.” Juan David Payares, Founder & CEO PayOli Solar and judge.
To support the design process, participating students worked alongside college mentors, who provided guidance on architecture, engineering concepts, and sustainability strategies as teams developed their projects.
“This competition gives students the opportunity to think critically about how the buildings we learn in can be part of the climate solution,” said Barbara Martinez-Guerrero, Executive Director of Dream in Green. “By designing net-zero schools, students are applying real-world sustainability concepts while imagining healthier, more resilient learning environments for future generations.”
The event was made possible with support from Curtis + Rogers Design Studio, whose commitment to sustainable architecture helped empower the next generation of climate-conscious designers. Architects from the local design studio served as judges for the competition, joined by other local professionals including a FIU professor, M-DCPS partners, and solar business professional.
The Design & Build Competition is part of Dream in Green’s Green Schools Challenge, a year-long environmental education program that engages students in hands-on sustainability projects. Through the program, students learn about energy conservation, waste reduction, climate science, and environmental leadership while implementing real solutions within their schools and communities.
Now in its eighth year, the Design & Build Competition continues to inspire young innovators to explore green careers and sustainable design, demonstrating how creativity, science, and collaboration can help build a more sustainable future.
