Dream in Green’s 7th annual Design & Build Competition unfolded in March 2025 at Brickell City Centre, uniting 8 local high schools in a showcase of their innovative 3D physical models. These models, crafted by student teams, depicted designs for green spaces that embody resilience and sustainability. This event was co-hosted by Swire Properties, a prominent South Florida real estate developer deeply committed to sustainable design and green building practices.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, the Design and Build competition tasked student with redesigning Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, Miami. They had to research the history and possible plans for restoration while understanding the challenges for this development. The students’ redesign of the area had to incorporate nature-based solutions, green design, and adaptations to climate threats.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgens kicked off the event addressing the students, teachers, and public. We also welcomed City of Miami Commissioner Damian Pardo as a judge. As the City of Miami is in the process of deciding the Stadium’s future, Commissioner Pardo’s insight was valuable feedback for the students.
The participating high school students received invaluable mentorship from Florida International University (FIU). Through a longstanding partnership with the Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design department at FIU, students were guided by experts in the field, enriching their understanding of sustainable design principles and urban planning concepts. This mentorship further empowered students to develop innovative solutions for creating resilient and environmentally conscious green spaces within their communities.
Each design underwent evaluation by a panel of judges comprising of a city official, local architecture firms, a professor from Florida International University, and engineering professionals. Congratulations to the winners!
